According to some sources, the word “sword” comes from the Greek spathe, derived from the verb pathein, which is also the root of the word pathos, meaning passion. Drawing from the manga and anime genres of “Magical Girl” and “Shōjo”—rich with sapphic and non-binary characters— Ali Arévalo reimagines the archetypal knight’s sword, transforming it into a fragile object that does not function as a weapon, but rather as a performative complement to envision a non-binary mythological subjectivity. While the sword may not cut, it does pierce and unlock identities, acting as a key capable of opening that which is presumed to be closed.
